Introducing: Albus trousers and shorts

Hi everyone!

If you follow me on Instagram you would have already heard about my new pattern Albus. Today I would like to talk about it a little bit more and gather all the info that you might want.

Albus is a stylish and comfortable pattern designed for children aged newborn and up to 4 years. It features a V-shaped waistband at the front and an elasticated back. This means it’s super quick and easy to put on and off, and it’s easy to fit most children’s bodies.

On the front, the legs are gathered to create some volume and give more space for your child to wriggle and move.

An easy yet trendy pattern

For my first pattern, I wanted to create an easy pattern that most beginners would be comfortable doing, but I also wanted a timeless style with cute details. Because I believe that easy doesn’t have to mean plain. You can actually do something full of personality even if you don’t have much sewing experience. And if you’re an expert, you can always play with it and make your own hacks! On the picture above, you can see that I added piping along the bottom of the front waistband to accentuate the shape and create contrast with the gathers.

Shorts or trousers? It’s up to you!

When you buy the pattern, you have two options, the trousers and the shorts. The shorts are designed to end just above the knees. While the trousers are finished with a classic hem, the shorts have small turn-ups. You can choose not to include these, but they take just a minute to complete and add that little extra touch.

How long will I need to make it?

To make either the trousers or the shorts, you will need about 4-5 hours to make it. I estimate that you need 1/2 hour to print and assemble the pattern, then about 20 minutes to cut your pieces and the rest of the time to sew. This pattern takes shape pretty fast and the only careful step is assembling the front waistband on the gathered front. But if you go slowly and pin you pieces well, then it will all go smoothly.

What fabric is the best and how much will I need?

For this pattern, I advise using woven fabrics in light to medium weight. Albus is a versatile pattern, so it will work great for hot and cold weather, and you can use many different fabrics with it.

For example, if you want floaty and lightweight trousers for summer, you can use double gauze, viscose or cotton lawn.

If you are making it for colder weather, flannel, wool used for suiting or even corduroys can work great. Just keep in mind that the heavier the fabric, the bulkier the gathers and back waistband. So if you pick cords, don’t go for chunky ribs.

Regarding the quantity, here are the requirements:

I’m a beginner, will I be able to make it?

Yes, absolutely. There are no big difficulty in this pattern and as long as you follow the instructions and take your time, you won’t fail! I have designed fully detailed instructions that will take you through each step of the making.

Ready to make it?
